Historically, the name QUORRA, also pronounced KWARA or KWORRA, was associated with the lower part of the River Niger. It was also an appellation to one of the two small steamers which in 1832 formed part of Magregor Laird's expedition to follow the Landers' trace of course of the River Niger to the sea. QUORRA, with ALBURKALF, were the first two European ships known to have accessed River Niger. QUORRA was broken up in Fernando Po which was then a Royal Naval Station of the Anti-Slavery Squadron.
To perpetuate the name, therefore, in 1957 shortly after the creation of the Nigerian Navy in 1956, the name QUORRA was selected for the first naval training establishment in Nigeria. The Nigerian Navy Ship QUORRA was formally commissioned on 1, February 1985 as part of the efforts to localize and expand training capacity in the Nigerian Navy.

The mission of Nigeria Navy Ship QUORRA is to provide professional, specialist and bespoke operations training for the Nigerian Navy, AFN and other Nigerian/International agencies' personnel through collaboration with relevant stakeholders towards optimal Nigerian Navy performance.
